MCX Daily Turnover Hits Record ₹62.93 Lakh Crore, Options Account For Over 98%

Mumbai witnessed the highest daily turnover in India's commodity derivatives market, with the Multi Commodity Exchange of India (MCX) reporting a record-breaking Rs 62.93 lakh crore on August 28. The surge was primarily fueled by high activity in commodity options, which generated turnover worth Rs 61,84,516.04 crore, accounting for over 98 percent of the exchange's overall turnover.

MCX stated that options turnover represents notional turnover. Commodity futures contributed Rs 1,08,949.42 crore to the total. Overall trading volume exceeded 3.13 crore lots, with the MCX website reporting 17,025,937 trades. The milestone comes amid efforts by the exchange to deepen participation and strengthen links between India’s physical commodity and derivatives markets.

In June, MCX introduced Good Delivery Norms for primary aluminium, refined copper, and refined zinc to ensure quality and process standards for metals entering the delivery mechanism. This move could increase the availability of standardized domestic metal for settlement and boost confidence in the ecosystem. Naveen Mathur, Director of Commodity, Currency, and GIFT City at IFSC, noted that growing participation indicates the expanding relevance of organized commodity markets for hedgers, traders, and investors, potentially enhancing price discovery and risk management opportunities.
