Man with sinus infection symptoms diagnosed with heart condition

Marc Gaudisosi, a touring musician, initially dismissed his fatigue and shortness of breath as consequences of his lifestyle. However, a persistent headache led him to believe he had a sinus infection. Despite his efforts to alleviate the symptoms, they persisted. In January 2025, he sought medical attention at a CVS Minute Clinic.

There, a nurse detected a heart murmur, prompting the clinic staff to encourage him to see a doctor promptly. Upon consulting his primary care physician, Gaudisosi was referred to a cardiologist, who confirmed the presence of mitral valve regurgitation. This condition, where blood leaks back into the heart, causes stress and can lead to complications such as heart arrhythmias and heart failure.

Gaudisosi's mother, Jean, had also been diagnosed with the condition in 1998 and required emergency surgery. Both Marc and his mother were understandably frightened by the diagnosis. Mitral valve regurgitation is typically not inherited, but there might be a genetic explanation for the family's shared condition. Marc's cardiologist suggested a referral to Dr. Sabet Hashim, who had previously performed mitral valve repairs on the Gaudisosi family.

Marc underwent a mitral valve repair on July 22, 2025, and experienced a smooth recovery. He returned to his band and celebrated the release of a worldwide album. Since the surgery, Gaudisosi has regained his energy, realizing the extent of the symptoms previously attributed to aging. He will continue regular checkups with his cardiologist, but is optimistic about his prognosis and plans to continue performing live shows and working on new music.
