Major General Ba-Taa-Banah urges media to help promote peace, stability

Major General Timothy Ba-Taa-Banah, Director of the Ghana National Counter Terrorism Fusion Centre, has called upon the media to leverage its influence to promote peace and stability in Ghana. Speaking at a media engagement in Dumesua, Major General Ba-Taa-Banah emphasized the media's critical role in reaching communities, shaping public discourse and providing early warning of developments that could threaten national peace.

He highlighted the media's importance as a vital partner of the national security architecture. During the event, themed "Broadcasting Peace: Responsible Journalism for National Development," various media practitioners and representatives from security institutions participated in discussions on responsible reporting and peace-sensitive journalism.

Major General Ba-Taa-Banah stressed that Ghana's peace and stability had not been achieved by the government and security agencies alone, attributing a significant role to the media. He cautioned against complacency, noting that the security environment had changed significantly. He urged journalists to actively identify tensions, fears and emerging threats before they escalate, emphasizing their unique position to communicate these concerns to leadership.

Major General Ba-Taa-Banah encouraged journalists to adopt the principle of "When you see something, you say something," advocating for responsible reporting of unusual developments and potential threats to enable authorities to take preventive action. The engagement also focused on strengthening communication channels between journalists and security institutions to facilitate quick verification and clarification of information, especially during periods of heightened tension.
