Mable Chan rules out cap on ride-hailing licences

Secretary for Transport and Logistics Mable Chan announced on Saturday that there will be no limit on the number of ride-hailing licenses granted to companies. This came after the Transport Department opened applications for the licenses the previous day. Speaking on Commercial Radio, Chan explained that applicants would be chosen based on their compliance with government requirements and financial stability.

She clarified that companies must have a paid-up capital of at least HK$50 million to qualify, which her department estimates will allow them to operate for a minimum of six months. Chan also mentioned that over 9,000 drivers have registered for a new combined written test for taxis and ride-hailing vehicles, with the department planning to begin the exams in mid-September.

Regarding the new Huanggang Port, Chan indicated that shuttle buses could be provided for locals and visitors during peak hours on public holidays. She hoped these short-haul shuttle bus routes would facilitate the smooth movement of travelers to destinations like Tuen Mun and Tai Po. Chan assured that multiple drills, including one involving 20,000 participants, were being conducted to enhance the efficiency of these stress tests.
