‘Long after President Trump is gone, it will still be called Lake Ontario’ — Premier Doug Ford fires back at ‘Lake America’ decree with giant sign

Ontario Premier Doug Ford fired back at President Donald Trump's "Lake America" decree with a massive sign proclaiming "Lake Ontario. Now and Always" near Grimsby, Ontario. The 24-by-12-foot sign, standing atop 6-foot legs, features the message in both English and French. Ford, wearing a Team Canada soccer jersey, declared that the name would endure long after Trump's presidency.

This response follows a series of escalating tensions between the two nations, including recent trade negotiations collapse and retaliatory tariffs. Trump's executive order aimed to rename the lake, reflecting his desire to subordinate Canada, a move that has been met with ridicule in Canada. Canadian Premier Wab Kinew likened Trump's actions to an aging rock band attempting to revive an old hit, while historian Robert Bothwell criticized Trump's attempt to make Canada a colony or absorb it into the United States.
