(LEAD) Centenarian athlete grabs 2 golds at Daegu WMAC

Centenarian athlete Sawang Janpram of Thailand claimed two more gold medals at the World Masters Athletics Championships (WMAC) held in Daegu, South Korea, on August 29. The 106-year-old athlete won the gold in the men's 400-gram javelin throw, throwing the javelin 10.04 meters on his first attempt. This victory came two days after he also won gold in the 1-kilogram discus throw category, throwing the discus 7.59 meters, setting an amateur world record in the process.

With these two additional golds, Janpram has now amassed an impressive total of 80 medals in his lifetime. He began participating in sports at the age of 80 and entered his first competition at the age of 97. Speaking to the press, Janpram expressed the profound significance of the competition, describing it as a joyful experience.

He also revealed his future ambition, stating that his next goal is to participate in a major track competition in Thailand in 2027. Health remains a priority for Janpram, who hopes that young people will heed this message and incorporate regular exercise into their daily routines. Janpram and his 74-year-old daughter and coach, Siripan, are among the more than 11,000 participants from 106 countries currently taking part in the WMAC Daegu event, which runs through the following Thursday across 34 categories in track, field, and road racing.
