KGBS calls for Form Six allowance to reflect Sarawak students’ needs

The Sarawak Bumiputera Teachers Union (KGBS) has urged the government to consider the needs of Sarawak students, especially those in rural areas, when determining the Form Six student allowance. President Zulkiflee Sebli welcomed Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim's announcement of the allowance in Budget 2027, emphasizing the need for the initiative to be inclusive, easily accessible, and address the challenges faced by students in rural Sarawak, such as higher transportation costs.

The allowance, meant to alleviate financial burdens, should also be viewed as an investment in human capital, helping students focus on their studies and achieve academic success. Anwar, who is also Finance Minister, said the exact amount of the allowance had not been decided yet and would depend on the government's financial capacity when Budget 2027 is presented in October.

The proposal emerged from 12 resolutions raised by student delegates at the Madani Pre-University Congress in Klang. Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek confirmed that all 12 resolutions were accepted and would be considered for implementation. Parents and educators are eagerly awaiting further details and a clear disbursement mechanism for the allowance, hoping it will ensure that financial constraints do not hinder students' access to quality education.
