The 2026/27 Premier League season will introduce several new rules for players, managers, and referees. One significant change involves goalkeeper injuries, with managers now required to substitute an outfield player who remains off the pitch for a full minute after a restart. Red cards will be issued for deliberate hair-pulling, while yellow cards will be given for actions without excessive force.

Injured players will face longer waits before resuming play. Treatment time will now increase from 30 seconds in 2025/26 to 2026/27, meaning players must stay off the pitch for at least 1 minute after receiving treatment.

Substitution rules have also been tightened. Players must now leave the pitch within 10 seconds of being substituted, or they'll have to wait until the next stoppage of play to re-enter, which must occur at least one minute after the initial planned substitution.

The five-second limit for goal kicks and throw-ins will remain in place, with violations resulting in an automatic corner kick or throw-in for the opposition. Referees will be particularly vigilant about players who focus solely on holding opponents, as they'll face more frequent penalties.
