IFFCO Chowk service road cave-in: Sewer line repair still on, may take 3-4 days

A major service road near IFFCO Chowk on the Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway caved in this week due to heavy rain, leaving a 10-foot sinkhole. The collapse happened on Tuesday afternoon, after an old 1,000-mm-diameter master sewer line beneath the road gave way. The incident disrupted water supply in Millennium City and caused traffic delays near the busy stretch to neighboring cities.

Although the water issue has been resolved, traffic problems persist. The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) began repair work after the site was drained and sewage flow redirected to an alternate manhole. Now, officials are focusing on repairing the sewer line using a trenchless method called Machine Wound Spiral Lining (MWSL).

This process involves creating a new, stronger polyvinyl chloride pipe within the damaged line, which is expected to take another three to four days. Once the sewer line is fixed, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) will handle the reconstruction and resurfacing of the road. The IFFCO Chowk junction, a critical transport hub connecting South Delhi, Gurgaon's industrial area, Manesar, and Jaipur, remains a congestion point with ongoing traffic diversions.
