HDFC Bank CEO Jagdishan to retire in October

HDFC Bank announced on Saturday that CEO Sashidhar Jagdishan will retire by the end of October, declining to seek another term amid uncertainty over the leadership of India's largest private-sector lender. The Board of Directors, during their meeting on Saturday, acknowledged Jagdishan's communication of his decision not to seek reappointment, despite attempts to persuade him otherwise.

Jagdishan, who assumed the role of MD and CEO in October 2020, succeeded Aditya Puri, who had led the bank for over two decades. Under his leadership, HDFC Bank completed its merger with parent HDFC Ltd, forming one of India's largest financial services groups. Following Jagdishan's retirement announcement, the private lender stated that its board will expedite the selection and appointment of his successor.

HDFC Bank has faced scrutiny since mid-March when its former chairman Atanu Chakraborty resigned, alleging practices at the bank were not aligned with his personal ethics. An external legal review later found no evidence to support Chakraborty's concerns. An internal review of the bank's arrangements with Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation for deposits in 2017 and 2021 found that the conduct was business overreach, not mala fide action or personal enrichment.

The board issued warning letters and imposed Rs 1 lakh penalties on Jagdishan, chief financial officer Srinivasan Vaidyanathan, and retail assets head Arvind Vohra. Leadership continuity is crucial for large private sector banks, as private banks do not have government control like state-owned lenders, and the board and RBI play central roles in ensuring orderly succession.
