Haunted Drake's Island in UK goes on sale for offers above £2 million

A historic island off the coast of Plymouth, England, known as Drake’s Island, is now available for purchase for offers exceeding £2 million, as reported by The Sun. The 6.4-acre island, situated in Plymouth Sound, boasts a Grade-II listed house, an underground tunnel network, and former military structures. The island's rich history is tied to Sir Francis Drake, the renowned English explorer, who was appointed Governor of the island in 1583 by Queen Elizabeth I.

Drake’s Island has a storied past as a military site, with its fortified structures dating back to the 16th century. The island is also home to an extensive underground tunnel system, although their existence remains a subject of local folklore. Despite the absence of a buyer in the previous attempt to sell the island in 2024, Carter Jonas, the estate agent marketing the property, believes that Drake’s Island holds immense potential for tourism and commercial ventures.

The current plans for Drake’s Island include the development of a 43-bed hotel, visitor facilities, and research and development projects focusing on the marine and natural environment. The island's unique historical significance and strategic location are expected to draw tourists and investors alike. Although the island is currently vacant, Carter Jonas emphasizes that its past commercial activities, which generated roughly £590,000 in gross income in 2023, demonstrate the potential for future revenue generation.
