Gunfire and explosions reported in Niger’s capital, local media and witness say

Niamey, Niger (AP) — Intense gunfire and blasts were heard overnight into Saturday morning in the capital, Niamey, including close to the main airport and near the presidential palace, according to an Associated Press witness and local news outlets. The Associated Press' anonymous source, for safety reasons, spoke on condition of anonymity.

The gunfire commenced after midnight at the Diori Hamani International Airport, which is home to a significant military installation. This marks the third unrest incident at the airport this year. Local media also reported gunfire emanating from the Plateau administrative district, where crucial government buildings are situated.

The ruling military junta, referred to as the National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland, announced that its armed forces have been mobilized. In a Facebook update, the council urged citizens to stay united, vigilant, and supportive. The precise reason behind the gunfire and explosions remains unknown, though a local lawmaker described it as a "cowardly attack."

The airport has been targeted twice by militants in the past months, as tensions rise against Niger's faltering military regime.
