Govt Cancels Licenses of 50 Pilots, Suspends 33 Others

The federal government has taken action against 50 pilots and suspended licenses for 33 others due to concerns over fake pilot licenses. This decision was made in accordance with the Civil Aviation Rules of 1994, as outlined in a written response from the Ministry of Defence during Friday's Question Hour. The move came in response to international flight restrictions placed on Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) by the United Kingdom, European Union, and United States. These restrictions were a result of allegations surrounding PIA's pilots and their licenses.

The cancellation of 50 pilot licenses and suspension of 33 others has had a significant financial impact on PIA. According to the ministry, the airline lost approximately Rs. 200 billion in revenue between August 2020 and December 2024. This loss is attributed to the restrictions imposed on PIA by the aforementioned international bodies. Furthermore, PIA lost access to the UK market, which is described as its most profitable international market.

PIA's competitors, including Emirates, Qatar Airways, Etihad Airways, British Airways, and Virgin Atlantic, have benefited from PIA's absence from the market. The government has also established a cabinet committee, headed by the defense minister, to further investigate the matter.
