Gauteng ambulance crew shot at on N1 near Pretoria while transporting patient

Early Saturday morning, a pair of Gauteng Emergency Medical Services officials were targeted in an armed assault while transporting a patient along the N1 highway. The Gauteng health department denounced the attack in a statement, emphasizing the egregious nature of the armed confrontation on the medical staff while they were performing their duties.

Paramedics were en route from Dr George Mukhari Academic Hospital to Jubilee Hospital with a patient in tow when their vehicle was targeted. According to department spokesperson Steve Mabona, the ambulance was allegedly struck near Phumlani Plaza around 1:30am. Upon stopping to inspect the vehicle, two male suspects approached the ambulance and began firing shots.

The paramedics fled to safety, with one taking cover while the other continued driving. Emergency services were promptly notified, and the South African Police Service, along with additional EMS crews, responded to the scene. Fortunately, the patient being transported was not harmed. Both officials were evaluated by medical professionals, and the department initiated employee wellness services to support them.

Mabona expressed deep concern over the ongoing threat paramedics face while on duty, stressing that such attacks not only endanger healthcare workers but also impede emergency response and put urgently needing patients at risk. The department implored residents to assist law enforcement in apprehending the suspects and reaffirmed its dedication to safeguarding front-line staff.
