Fire-hit Klongthom Center can’t be saved, says Chadchart

A major fire broke out at Klongthom Center, a popular Bangkok market, on Saturday afternoon, causing extensive damage to the three-storey building. Toxic smoke, a serious health hazard, rose from the top of the building as firefighters worked to contain the flames and prevent their spread. Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt inspected the scene and declared the building a total loss, stating that the damage was 100% and that the structure would have to be demolished.

The fire, which started on Friday evening, brought down the main building at around 10.16pm, with the blaze being brought under control by 11.13pm. The market, which housed about 300 shop stalls and 100 operators, sold various goods such as batteries, solar panels, chemicals, and second-hand products. The smoke from the fire measured at 630 microgrammes per cubic metre, which is considered extremely hazardous.

People living or working near the site were advised to wear protective N95 masks, and vulnerable groups were urged to take extra precautions. The market, built about three decades ago, was a popular destination for those seeking cheap goods and antiques. The building and its assets were insured, and compensation would be provided through the insurance process.
