Fanar showcases Qatar’s strides in Arabic AI: expert

Qatar has emerged as a regional pioneer in artificial intelligence (AI) and digital transformation through Fanar, a cutting-edge Arabic generative AI platform crafted by the Qatar Computing Research Institute (QCRI). Dr Aref al-Tamimi, a distinguished Qatari AI expert from QCRI, stated that Fanar is a testament to the nation's determination to lead the region in digital innovation, in line with Qatar National Vision 2030 and the Digital Agenda 2030.

Dr al-Tamimi highlighted that Qatar has been diversifying its economy, moving beyond its traditional oil and gas sectors, and has made significant strides in AI research, Arabic language technologies, cybersecurity, and digital transformation. Fanar is a multi-model AI system, designed specifically for the Arabic-speaking populace, capable of understanding and generating Arabic text and audio with remarkable depth, accuracy, and cultural subtlety.

This platform enables governments, educators, creators, and businesses to interact intelligently within the Arabic AI landscape. Dr al-Tamimi emphasized that while international cooperation is vital for scientific progress, it must be balanced with self-reliance. Countries should invest in domestic computing infrastructure, secure national cloud platforms, and trusted data repositories, much like Fanar.
