EU Officials Deny Imminent Russian Threat to NATO Despite CIA Visit

European officials have dismissed claims of an imminent Russian threat to NATO and the Baltic states, countering reports concerning CIA Director John Ratcliffe's unannounced visit to Moscow. According to Bloomberg, Ratcliffe's trip likely aimed to discuss efforts to end the war in Ukraine, reinforce NATO's Article 5 mutual defense commitments, and address the ongoing conflict with Iran.

European officials stated they had not received an official briefing on the visit, relying instead on independent intelligence and established US procedures. While hybrid operations, such as assassination attempts, sabotage, and airspace incursions, have increased, European officials noted that Russia's conventional military posture has not changed, indicating no imminent attack.

NATO allies are reportedly considering ways to enhance intelligence and military cooperation with Russia to mitigate the risk of miscalculation due to growing hybrid threats. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, however, warned on Aug. 28 that Russia was actively preparing for further escalation, stating that the upcoming autumn and winter would be critical for the security of Ukraine, Poland, and the broader region.

Tusk noted that Warsaw was not surprised by Ratcliffe's trip, as the country frequently cooperates with the CIA, though he emphasized that the current security situation extends beyond the visit's scope. Tusk's warning followed exchanges between Polish and Ukrainian leaders reaffirming their bilateral ties amid the ongoing conflict.

Ukrainian officials confirmed receiving a letter from Polish President Karol Nawrocki to President Volodymyr Zelensky on Independence Day, in which Nawrocki wished Ukraine victory in its struggle against Russia and restoration of its internationally recognized borders.
