Dortmund fear serious knee injury for star signing Konstantelias

Borussia Dortmund are worried about the potential severity of an injury suffered by their new signing, Giannis Konstantelias. The Greek international joined the German club in the summer and made an immediate impact in their opening Bundesliga match of the 2026/27 season, scoring a goal in a 2-0 victory over Hamburger SV.

However, early in the second half of that match, Konstantelias appeared to twist his knee while contesting a challenge with Hamburger defender Bakery Jatta. The 23-year-old quickly left the field to receive medical attention and Dortmund are now bracing themselves for the possibility of a serious injury. Sporting director Ole Book expressed concern, stating, "We should be a little cautious today, but we are certainly concerned that it could be a serious injury."

Head coach Niko Kovac also shared his worries, saying, "There is concern about that," and admitted, "What makes me very sad is the fact that Giannis has been injured and that we may have to talk about something more serious."

The diagnosis is still pending following the incident, but Dortmund officials are not holding out much hope for a positive outcome. Book speculated that the injury could be an ACL tear, a devastating knee ligament tear that often requires surgery and a lengthy recovery period. Despite the setback, the club remains hopeful for Konstantelias' full recovery and remains committed to supporting the young player during this challenging time.
