China’s CXMT starts LPDDR6 production, secures Xiaomi foldable phone deal

Chinese memory chipmaker ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT) has commenced mass production of its latest LPDDR6 DRAM chips, which will be utilized in Xiaomi's upcoming 18 Fold flagship foldable smartphone. CXMT announced the production start on Chinese social media platform Weibo, with Xiaomi confirming the arrangement via its official Weibo account. The new foldable smartphone is set for release in September.

This development marks a significant advancement for CXMT, as it has only recently begun mass-producing its previous-generation LPDDR5 chips, demonstrating the company's rapid progress in memory technology. LPDDR6 is CXMT's most advanced dynamic random-access memory chip for mobile devices, narrowing the technology gap with global memory chipmakers like Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix.

During a busy week for CXMT, the company reported a substantial first-half profit surge in its earnings release, with revenue increasing by 874% from a year earlier to 150.3 billion yuan ($22.36 billion). Additionally, CXMT shipped LPDDR6 samples to customers for use in mobile devices, servers, and smart cars. Separately, CXMT filed a lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Defense, protesting its inclusion on a list of companies deemed linked to China's military.

This lawsuit comes amid ongoing U.S.-China tensions over advanced semiconductor technology, with Washington imposing restrictions to limit China's access to sophisticated chips and chipmaking equipment.
