China-Nepal floods: rescuers pull 2 survivors out of rubble near Tibet border crossing

Chinese rescuers persist in their search for survivors amidst recent floods along the Tibet-Nepal border. Two villagers, near the Gyirong checkpoint, were pulled from the debris early Saturday morning. However, no remains were discovered at the crossing site, where a mudslide had completely demolished the building. Seven confirmed deaths have been reported on the Tibetan side, alongside 544 individuals still unaccounted for.

In Nepal, the death toll surpassed 610, with over 2,400 missing. The rescue teams grappled with treacherous terrain and unfavorable weather conditions, with forecasts predicting light rain and temperatures as low as 46 degrees Fahrenheit in Gyirong county over the next three days. An advance team of eight firefighters was compelled to withdraw from the scene on Friday due to the imminent danger posed by a lake formed after a glacier collapse, which triggered the floods on Wednesday.

The firefighters carried 72-hour self-sufficiency kits containing food, water, thermal gear, and medical supplies. The initial days following natural disasters are typically the most critical for the discovery of survivors. Liu, the rescue team leader, explained that advance scout units were transmitting real-time GPS coordinates and road conditions to the main search teams to facilitate optimal route planning.

Nepal agreed to permit foreign emergency teams to assist in rescue efforts following international pressure from governments whose citizens are still missing. The Nepalese government had initially claimed proficiency in handling the rescue operation, expressing a need for expertise in specialized and technical domains. Currently, 517 foreigners from 31 countries remain missing, including 178 from India, 65 from the United States, 53 from Ukraine, 35 from Australia, and 33 from Britain.
