Chicken highway heist ends in deadly police shootout

A six-man gang stole over 100kg of frozen chicken from a moving refrigerated truck on a highway near Cairo, resulting in a deadly police shootout that left three suspects dead and three others arrested. The heist occurred on August 25 along the Cairo-Ismailia Desert Road, part of Al-Shorouk's jurisdiction in eastern Cairo. Footage of the operation, filmed from another vehicle, quickly went viral online, showcasing the thieves' daring maneuver.

The suspects managed to position themselves between the moving trucks and transfer boxes of frozen poultry into their own pickup truck, all while the driver continued on the road unaware of the theft. Approximately 105kg of chicken was taken from the loaded truck, which was carrying about four tonnes of frozen poultry. The unusual crime came to light after the video circulated on social media, leading to an investigation into the identities of the perpetrators.

The suspects were subsequently located in Cairo and Qalyubia governorate. A security operation targeting their hideouts turned into an armed confrontation, resulting in the deaths of three gang members and the arrest of the remaining three. Egyptian authorities recovered the stolen truck, weapons, and part of the stolen goods, including two automatic rifles and shotguns.

The surviving suspects were handed over to prosecutors as investigators expanded their inquiries into other potential crimes linked to the group. This incident, primarily notable for its method of stealing cargo from a moving vehicle, raised concerns about the risks involved and the disruption it can cause to the food transport network.

Unauthorised access to refrigerated cargo compartments can compromise temperature controls and expose food products to contamination or improper handling. The viral video demonstrating the thieves' technique highlighted the increasing role of mobile-phone footage in exposing crimes that might otherwise go unnoticed.
