British-Pakistani Journalist Files Complaint Against Sky Sports Over Imran Khan Sons’ Interview

Azhar Javaid, a British-Pakistani journalist, has lodged an official complaint with the UK’s media watchdog Ofcom regarding a contentious Sky Sports interview with the sons of former Prime Minister Imran Khan. Javaid’s complaint seeks a thorough examination of the program in light of the broadcaster’s alleged failure to adhere to UK broadcasting standards concerning impartiality, accuracy, and fairness.

This follows a dispute over Sky Sports airing a pre-recorded interview with Imran Khan’s sons, Kasim and Sulaiman, during the second Test match between England and Pakistan at Lord’s. Conducted by former England cricket captain Michael Atherton, the interview aired during the lunch break and centered on the brothers’ concerns about their father’s health and prison conditions.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) had opposed the inclusion of political content in the cricket broadcast, attempting to prevent its airing and warning that Pakistani players might remain in the dressing room if the segment went ahead. Despite initial delays, Sky Sports eventually broadcast the interview, and Pakistan returned to the field after talks involving the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB).

The Pakistan Board subsequently lodged a formal complaint with Sky Sports and reportedly raised the matter with the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office. Javaid has now turned to Ofcom, questioning whether the program provided sufficient context and afforded Pakistani authorities a fair chance to respond. He emphasized that his complaint does not seek to curtail freedom of speech or prevent journalists from conducting interviews, but rather addresses the broadcaster’s editorial responsibilities, accuracy, impartiality, and fairness when broadcasting serious political allegations to a global audience.

Javaid requested Ofcom to independently assess the interview, the questions posed by Atherton, the allegations made during the program, and whether Sky Sports provided an adequate platform for the other side to respond. He emphasized that Ofcom should evaluate if the broadcaster complied with the necessary broadcasting standards.
