BofA Just Put a $70 Target on This Overlooked AI Packaging Stock

BofA Securities upgraded Amkor Technology, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMKR) to a Buy rating and set a $70 price target, up from its previous $62 target. The rating change comes as the semiconductor packager is viewed as an underappreciated beneficiary of rising packaging complexity. The stock surged around 9% following the upgrade. Analysts emphasize that Amkor's role in the AI supply chain becomes increasingly important as chip manufacturing becomes more intricate, not just as chip sales increase.

BofA Securities highlights how Amkor's pivot towards advanced products, such as 2.5D packaging, HDFO-RDL, bridge technologies, co-packaged optics, and testing, transforms packaging from a lower-value manufacturing step to a performance constraint. With AI accelerators integrating logic, high-bandwidth memory, and networking components within complex packages, packaging gains increased significance in the AI ecosystem.

The research firm also considers the strategic value of Amkor's planned Arizona facility as the demand for more domestic semiconductor capacity grows. BofA Securities provides a concrete earnings projection, estimating Amkor's EPS to climb from $1.51 in 2025 to $3.41 in 2028, driven by improved product mix, utilization, and operating leverage.

Despite being a capital-intensive outsourced assembly and test provider, earlier customer engagement and prepayments can enhance visibility for the company as it commits capacity. The main counterargument suggests that packaging remains a manufacturing function, requiring capacity development before revenue generation. This could impact margins during semiconductor cycle fluctuations and give customers leverage during negotiations.
