Berliners tip the most of all Germans while on holiday, says new survey

A recent survey of 2,000 Germans has revealed that Berliners are the most generous tippers among their fellow countrymen when traveling abroad. Despite Germany's reputation for being generous tippers, Berliners consistently stand out in this regard. The findings come from a study conducted by travel agency TUI, which surveyed 2,000 Germans.

According to the survey, only 37% of Germans tip more on holiday than they do in their everyday life. However, the amount Berliners tip while on vacation varies depending on their place of origin. Berliners, who are not typically associated with a cheerful disposition, are surprisingly the most generous tippers. TUI reported that 35% of Berliners tip at least 10% or more during their travels, compared to 30% from Hamburg, 21.3% from North Rhine-Westphalia, and only 14.1% from Saxony.

On average, Germans on holiday tip 21.2% or more, with a mere 3.3% leaving no tip at all. The survey also identified differences in tipping habits based on age and gender. Younger Germans, specifically those aged 25 to 34, are considerably more generous, tipping twice as much as 55 to 65-year-olds. Additionally, men tend to tip more frequently, with 25% of men tipping 10% or more compared to 17% of women.

Hospitality workers, cleaners, and hotel employees are the three groups most likely to receive tips from German tourists.
