Berlin Brothersvalley runs past Juniata Valley to open season

Junior running back Carter Durst delivered an outstanding performance, rushing for 112 yards and two touchdowns, as Berlin Brothersvalley secured a 25-14 victory over Juniata Valley at the Center Rock Inc. Sports Complex on Friday, Aug. 28. The Mountaineers capitalized on a strong start, as senior captain Jake Philip's roughing of Elah Glenny on the opening kickoff resulted in Corbin Kordell's touchdown run, giving Berlin Brothersvalley an early 7-0 lead just 11 seconds into the game.

Juniata Valley regained the lead in the first quarter after a short punt gave the Hornets the ball at the Mountaineers' 33-yard line. However, senior running back Andrew Clark answered with a 2-yard touchdown run, extending the Mountaineers' lead to 13-7 with nine minutes and thirty-six seconds remaining in the half.

The Mountaineers extended their lead at halftime, with Durst rushing for another 24 yards, and Berlin Brothersvalley held a 13-7 advantage. In the second half, Berlin Brothersvalley took control. The Mountaineers moved 65 yards on the ground – capped by Jaedon Brown's 26-yard touchdown run – giving them a 19-7 lead with seven minutes and twenty-eight seconds left in the quarter.

Berlin Brothersvalley continued their dominance with a 16-play drive that covered 92 yards into the fourth quarter. Quarterback Brady Janidlo connected with Dawson Shaffer on a 31-yard pass on third-and-26, setting up Durst's second touchdown, a 3-yard burst. The extra point attempt was wide left, but Berlin Brothersvalley maintained a 25-7 lead with eight minutes and thirty seconds remaining in the contest.

Clark added a late touchdown from two yards out with 4:55 left, but the Mountaineers' efforts were thwarted by three penalties on a punt, allowing them to retain possession. Despite Clark's struggles on the ground, amassing just 72 yards, the Mountaineers' defense managed to hold Dortmund Brothersvalley to just 72 yards on the ground.
