Back from Germany, Indian hit with familiar question: What was your JEE rank?

Mayukh, an Indian professional who had recently returned to Bengaluru after several years living in Germany, posted a thought-provoking question on X: Why do people continue to ask about one's JEE rank and college attended, even decades after completing their undergraduate education? Mayukh explained that during his time abroad, he seldom encountered individuals familiar with Indian undergraduate institutions, such as IITs, NITs, or Goa University.

His professional trajectory had also altered since graduating in engineering and transitioning into pure science research. Once, his undergraduate institution was of little importance to his career, while now, it seems people in his professional network focus more on the reputation of his graduate school, research output, and speaking engagements.

However, during his recent trip back to Bengaluru, Mayukh observed that conversations still often revolved around JEE ranks and college names, even among people well-established in their careers. He pondered why an examination taken during adolescence remains a point of discussion for individuals in their 40s. Mayukh questioned whether this fixation could be linked to a sense of regret over missed childhood experiences.

His post resonated with many, who shared similar sentiments about India's enduring focus on academic pedigree. Some users felt that the prestige rankings held little weight outside of India, while others saw it as a reflection of the pressure to meet parental expectations.
