Al-Ittihad submits offer for Benfica midfielder Leandro Barreiro: reports

Al-Ittihad has reportedly made a formal bid to sign Benfica's Luxembourg midfielder Leandro Barreiro, 26, in an effort to bolster the team before the transfer window closes. The Portuguese club is seeking to reinforce its squad with Barreiro's arrival, as confirmed by Portuguese media. Barreiro has been identified as one of Al-Ittihad's top targets, with previous interest reported by A Bola in July 2024 when the club considered him a potential replacement for Brazilian midfielder Fabinho.

The move is also reportedly linked to Dutch coach Jens Vissing, who had previously worked with Barreiro during his time at Benfica. Their familiarity with the player's abilities has increased the likelihood of successful negotiations. Barreiro is known for his tactical versatility, capable of playing in various midfield roles, ranging from a holding midfielder to a more advanced position.

Having joined Benfica in the summer of 2024 from German side Mainz, Barreiro made a significant impact in his first season, playing 27 matches and scoring three goals. In the following season, he appeared in 31 games, contributing with three goals and five assists. Al-Ittihad's transfer activity extends beyond Barreiro, as the club is also pursuing deals to sign Japan's Ritsu Doan and Algeria's Hicham Boudaoui to further strengthen their midfield and attacking options following the departure of Frenchman Moussa Diaby.
