AG: Lahad Datu case highlights role of justice system in defending sovereignty

In the aftermath of the high-profile armed intrusion in Lahad Datu between February and April 2013, which claimed the lives of nine security personnel, the justice system played a crucial role in safeguarding Malaysia's sovereignty. Seven men, including a nephew of Jamalul Kiram, were sentenced to death in 2024 for waging war against the Yang di-Pertuan Agong following the incident.

Attorney-General Tan Sri Mohd Dusuki Mokhtar, who handled the trial, emphasized that a sovereign nation must be firm in protecting its security while ensuring that accused individuals are dealt with through a transparent, fair, and impartial legal process. The case tested the strength of the justice system, involving many accused, numerous witnesses, and intricate evidence that required careful examination.

Dusuki highlighted the complexity of the trial, noting that prosecutors had to ensure every action was based on the law and evidence, rather than emotion or pressure. The trial underscored the importance of respecting the rights of the accused to a fair trial, while handling the case with great care, firmness, and integrity. The experience reinforced his understanding of what it means to defend the country's sovereignty, as he acknowledged the personal impact of hearing evidence about the courage and sacrifices of security personnel facing dangerous circumstances.

The Lahad Datu case, attracting both domestic and international attention, served as a reminder of the need to uphold the principle of a fair trial for every accused person while presenting the case based on available evidence and in accordance with the law.
