'A gritty innings' - Lawrence digs in to help England build big lead

Former England captain Michael Vaughan has praised batsman Dan Lawrence's performance and believes the 29-year-old should retain his place in the Test side when Jacob Bethell returns from injury. Lawrence, a left-handed batsman who also bowls part-time off-spin, was initially selected to fill the void left by Ben Stokes' retirement earlier this summer.

However, Lawrence's recent form has proven his worth, as he scored 51 runs in the first Test at Headingley and a crucial 50 not out off 66 balls on day three of the second Test against Pakistan.

Vaughan, speaking to BBC Test Match Special, stated that Lawrence's inclusion in the England side will be enjoyable to watch and that his off-spin could prove valuable in future matches. Despite only bowling one over in the series so far, Lawrence has demonstrated adaptability and an attacking mindset. The England team's current balance, with Lawrence picked ahead of a frontline spinner, appears well-suited to home conditions and could also be effective in South Africa and Australia during England's winter tours.

While stronger spin options will likely be necessary for the upcoming tour of Bangladesh, the strength of England's pace quartet of Ollie Robinson, Jofra Archer, Gus Atkinson, and Josh Tongue has reduced the need for a spinner in home conditions. This shift in strategy has benefited Lawrence's case for continued selection. Key decisions remain to be made, as Bethell is currently sidelined due to a knee injury.

Options for his potential return include replacing Lawrence or regaining his place from Jordan Cox, who has impressed with two half-centuries while filling in for Bethell at number three. Other scenarios involve pushing Cox or Bethell up to open in place of Emilio Gay or moving Cox down the order to replace Jamie Smith as wicketkeeper.

Smith has scored 61 runs in England's first innings and improved his glove work following a disappointing performance during the Ashes series.
