28 inmates acquire computer skills in Ogun

Twenty-eight inmates at the Old Abeokuta Custodial Centre in Ibara, Ogun State recently completed a basic computer skills training program. This initiative aimed to equip inmates with practical skills that would help them lead productive lives after their release. The State Controller of Corrections, Abioye Kamarudeen Adesina, addressed the graduation ceremony, explaining that the program, organized by the Centre for Legal Support and Inmate Rehabilitation (CELSIR) alongside Kastenbeelo Computer Training Institute, sought to prepare inmates for life outside of prison walls.

Adesina emphasized that learning computer skills would offer the inmates better prospects for employment and self-reliance upon their return to society. He reiterated that rehabilitation is a fundamental duty of the Correctional Service, asserting that inmates should be given opportunities to acquire skills that can aid in their personal development.

The Controller called for greater support from non-governmental organizations, private entities, and other stakeholders to enhance rehabilitation and reintegration processes. Adesina further urged the graduates to utilize their new skills wisely and remain vigilant to avoid actions that could lead them back into the correctional system.

He emphasized, "You must use these skills to create better opportunities for yourselves and contribute positively to society." The graduation ceremony saw the provision of laptops and a projector by generous donors to facilitate the inmates' online learning.
