Zoomlion intensifies disinfection and disinfestation exercise in Oti Region

Zoomlion Ghana Limited has ramped up a seven-day disinfection and disinfestation campaign across the Oti Region to curb disease outbreaks and enhance environmental sanitation following recent flooding. The exercise, which began concurrently in Krachi East and West Municipalities, aims to encompass all nine Municipal and District Assemblies (MDAs) in the area.

It is carried out in partnership with the local assemblies, who have pinpointed critical zones requiring attention. The initiative focuses on areas like markets, shops, public toilets, drains, refuse container sites, waste-dumping grounds, flood-prone neighborhoods, and other high-risk public spaces that could serve as breeding grounds for disease vectors and harmful pathogens.

Mr. Joseph Buabeng, the Oti Regional Manager of Zoomlion Ghana Limited, explained that the initiative aligns with the company's Corporate Social Responsibility and its commitment to public health and local sanitation issues. It goes beyond traditional fumigation to encompass thorough disinfection and disinfestation, targeting disease vectors, reducing pathogens, and minimizing the risk of waterborne and other communicable diseases prevalent after flooding and inadequate sanitation.

Mr. Buabeng emphasized the proactive nature of this measure, aimed at averting potential outbreaks rather than reacting to them. He highlighted that floodwaters can carry sewage, waste, and contaminants into waterways and public areas, amplifying the risk of diseases like cholera in regions already grappling with sanitation issues.

Specific emphasis is placed on waste-dumping sites and regions near water bodies, where decomposing waste, leachate, and elevated fly populations could pose significant environmental and public health threats. This intervention is guided by a directive from Dr. Joseph Siaw Agyepong, the Executive Chairman of the Jospong Group of Companies, to assist communities nationwide in combating vector-borne diseases and diminishing the threat posed by harmful pathogens.

Beyond this immediate action, Mr. Buabeng called for enduring solutions, such as constructing properly engineered landfills, tightening regulations on waste transportation, and establishing strategic waste transfer facilities in rapidly expanding municipalities. The Environmental Health Officer at Krachi East Municipal Assembly, Mr. Adem Atiase, praised Zoomlion for the initiative and expressed gratitude for the company's contribution to the CSR effort.

He highlighted that the exercise would augment the Assembly’s environmental health initiatives, leading to safer, cleaner, and healthier public spaces for residents. This endeavor is part of Zoomlion's broader nationwide disinfection and disinfestation program, aimed at bolstering collaboration with local authorities, enhancing environmental sanitation, controlling disease vectors, preventing potential disease outbreaks, and promoting cleaner, safer, and healthier communities nationwide.
