“You can have a friend in me, but don’t attempt to infiltrate my back” – Afenyo-Markin to Agalga

Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin conveyed to newly appointed Majority Leader James Agalga his willingness to collaborate, but cautioned against undermining or infiltrating the Minority Caucus. Addressing the Parliament floor on August 27, Afenyo-Markin expressed his intent to engage with Agalga through cooperation instead of confrontation.

He elucidated that the Minority's purpose extends beyond opposing the government; they provide alternative viewpoints and scrutinize decisions to benefit the nation. "You can find in me a friend," Afenyo-Markin stated. "My role is not to obstruct you. My role is to offer a different perspective on matters you may not perceive." However, he delineated the distinction between constructive cooperation and attempts to weaken the Minority Caucus, warning Agalga against meddling in the unity of his side of the House.

"But James, as you step into your role, do not attempt to infiltrate my back," Afenyo-Markin cautioned. Agalga, who assumed the Majority Leader position following the National Democratic Congress' (NDC) announcement of leadership changes, now leads the NDC Parliamentary Caucus while Afenyo-Markin continues as Minority Leader. Their exchange sets the precedent for their parliamentary partnership, with Afenyo-Markin signaling his readiness to cooperate while emphasizing the importance of preserving the independence and cohesion of the Minority Caucus.
