Yoga , health camps for elderly: All under one roof in Delhi government’s new initiative

Delhi's government has unveiled a new initiative called 'Vayo Anand,' aimed at providing a comprehensive recreational and health-focused environment for senior citizens in the city. This pilot program, to be run at community centers, will offer a wide range of activities and resources to help elderly residents maintain an active lifestyle and combat loneliness.

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta emphasized the importance of preserving the dignity and well-being of Delhi's senior citizens, stating that the government is committed to creating safe, accessible spaces for them to engage in recreational and health-related activities. The initiative will provide facilities such as indoor games, seating arrangements, fans, coolers, televisions, computers, newspapers, magazines, and books to keep residents engaged during their leisure time.

In addition to the recreational amenities, the centers will host special events like International Yoga Day, World Senior Citizen Day, and national holidays. Monthly medical camps and first-aid kits will also be available, along with health and fitness classes, outdoor tours, storytelling sessions, painting, craft, pottery, nutritional counselling, and both indoor and outdoor games.

To ensure accessibility, preference will be given to sites on the ground floor or buildings with elevators, particularly for senior citizens with disabilities or limited mobility. Special attention will be paid to organizing programs for women, persons with disabilities, and transgender seniors.

Financial assistance will be provided to private operators running under this scheme, with centers required to maintain at least 200 members aged 60 or above. Eligible centers will receive Rs 2.40 lakh in annual financial aid, paid in two half-yearly installments. In case of emergencies, these centers will maintain contact with nearby police stations and hospitals.
