Why Germany's military is betting on gamers

Germany's military believes that the growing popularity of video games is an opportunity to attract young people to its ranks. Gamescom, a world-renowned video game trade show, has become a key platform for the Bundeswehr, Germany's armed forces, to engage with potential recruits. Last year, attendees at the event were predominantly male, with a significant number falling within the 16-25 age bracket, a demographic the military is eager to reach.

The German government has allocated substantial funds to modernize its armed forces, with a target of 260,000 active-duty soldiers by 2035. The Bundeswehr first attended Gamescom in 2016, and has since returned each year. At the event, military personnel demonstrate various aspects of their jobs, including cyber defense through a virtual reality simulation, piloting a naval vessel, and even testing physical strength.

The Bundeswehr's goal is to attract individuals who are tech-savvy and capable of handling the technological demands of modern warfare. While some critics argue that gaming skills do not necessarily translate into being a good soldier, the military emphasizes the importance of possessing a strong technological foundation. Lt. Gen. Robert Sieger, head of personnel management at the Bundeswehr, stresses the seriousness of military service and the need for recruits to understand the gravity of the situation.

The Bundeswehr's presence at Gamescom has sparked some controversy, with peace advocates criticizing the military for using gaming-related tactics to recruit. However, the military maintains that its participation is essential for engaging with the younger generation and showcasing the diverse career opportunities available in the armed forces.
