Vietnam seeks deeper FIFA ties on embattled Infantino's visit

Dubai – The longstanding rift between European football’s governing body, UEFA, and the international governing entity, FIFA, has escalated into a high-stakes confrontation. The dispute began over FIFA’s abandoned plan to bring private investment into its commercial operations through a proposed new commercial entity, FFE. This plan would have permitted private investors to acquire a stake in future revenues from FIFA competitions, including the World Cup, with the potential valuation reaching $20 billion.

UEFA has expressed concerns regarding the proposal's development, valuation, and approval process, alleging that it was pursued by FIFA’s President, Gianni Infantino, and a select group of advisers without adequate consultation from FIFA’s governing bodies and member associations.

UEFA has initiated legal proceedings against Infantino in Switzerland, seeking documents from relevant entities and potential investors. The current FIFA President has previously held the position of general secretary at UEFA from 2009 to 2016. Infantino has maintained that FFE would have generated additional revenue for football development, provided it received the necessary approval from FIFA’s member associations and the FIFA Council. However, FIFA has permanently abandoned the project.

Despite the termination of FFE, UEFA remains deeply invested in the dispute as it recognizes the significant financial and political influence wielded by FIFA and UEFA. The World Cup, FIFA’s most valuable asset, is controlled by FIFA, while UEFA oversees some of the sport’s biggest competitions, such as the Champions League and European Championship. The ongoing conflict revolves around who holds the reins to shape football’s future.

UEFA’s president, Aleksander Ceferin, has been one of Infantino’s most vocal critics, and the European football body, alongside several European associations, has demanded increased transparency and an independent investigation into the failed project. By seeking evidence that could potentially lead to criminal proceedings against Infantino, UEFA aims to weaken his position as FIFA President, to be contested in 2027.

The dispute has evolved from a disagreement over a proposed $4.2 billion deal to a clash over governance and control of the sport, leaving the ultimate question unanswered: whether the failed plan has transformed into a more profound battle over football’s destiny.
