Ukraine struck Tu-95 at base Russia launches its cruise missiles on Ukraine’s civilians. Satellite image shows third of right wing gone

On 28 August, satellite imagery revealed the aftermath of a strike on a Russian Tu-95 strategic bomber at the Engels-2 airbase in Russia. The Ukrainian Security Service's Alpha unit had successfully targeted the aircraft, resulting in a significant portion of its right wing being damaged according to the satellite photo. The Tu-95 is a key component of Russia's nuclear triad, routinely used to launch cruise missiles against Ukrainian civilians.

The Engels-2 airbase, which houses multiple Tu-95MS and Tu-160 strategic bombers, is a strategic target due to its role in Russia's military operations against Ukraine. Russian strikes on Ukrainian bombers and airfields have been a key aspect of the conflict, aimed at undermining the aggressor's military capabilities. This is not the first time Ukrainian forces have targeted a Russian bomber at the Engels-2 base; a similar attack took place in early July, destroying another Tu-95.

Despite the damage, analysts estimate Russia still possesses up to 12 serviceable Tu-95MS bombers, some of which were still operational following Operation Spiderweb, a major Ukrainian offensive in June 2025.
