UG expands distance learning, online programmes to widen access to higher education

The University of Ghana College of Education is expanding its reach to make higher education more accessible through distance learning, fully online programmes, and a growing range of specialised academic offerings, according to Professor Samuel Amponsah, Dean of Continuing and Distance Education. Speaking on JoyFM Super Morning Show, Prof. Amponsah highlighted the School of Continuing and Distance Education's role in providing flexible learning opportunities to students across the country.

The programme operates through 11 centres and currently offers five diploma programmes and three degree programmes. In a move to meet changing educational needs, the university introduced the Educational Technology programme last year, a fully online course. The School of Continuing and Distance Education also offers programmes in Adult Education, such as Human Resource Development, Professional Development, and Development Education, with recent additions like Youth Development and Leadership.

Prof. Amponsah disclosed that seven new programmes have been introduced at various levels, including postgraduate programmes in Educational Leadership and Management, Educational Innovations, and Educational Pedagogy. The School of Education and Leadership includes Teacher Education, which has about 20 degree programmes developed through university collaborations, covering disciplines from visual arts to engineering.

Additionally, an innovative Management and Leadership in Sports programme, offered by the Department of Physical Education and Sports, has attracted considerable interest. The University of Ghana's Annual New Year’s Conference, one of its flagship programmes, will focus on national issues like economic stability, sustainability, and Ghana's strategic direction in the post-IMF era, with preparations underway for the 78th edition in January.
