UAE leaders offer condolences over death of Norway’s King Harald V

Prime Minister Narendra Modi mourned the passing of Norway's King Harald V, remembering their encounter earlier in the year. Crown Prince Haakon succeeded his father as King Haakon VIII, taking the motto "All for Norway." Haakon's oldest child, Ingrid Alexandra, now inherits the throne. The Norwegian Constitution was amended in 1990 to prioritize the firstborn child, regardless of gender, but the change did not apply retroactively.

Haakon completed his education at the University of California at Berkeley, London School of Economics and Political Science, and the Royal Norwegian Naval Academy. Haakon and Crown Princess Mette-Marit married in 2001, overcoming initial public skepticism due to her past associations.

They have two children, Ingrid Alexandra and Prince Sverre Magnus. Mette-Marit was diagnosed with a rare form of pulmonary fibrosis in 2018 and underwent a lung transplant in June.
