Two days on, rescuers scour debris in Nepal as risk of fresh flooding grows

Rescue efforts intensified in Nepal on Friday as the death toll from a flash flood that struck two days prior climbed to 469, with nearly 1,000 more people yet missing across Nepal and Tibet. The catastrophic flood, triggered by a glacier collapse, swept through villages and valleys, obliterating infrastructure and leaving behind a grim scene of destruction.

Confirmed deaths now include over 540 foreigners, straining relief operations and prompting authorities to warn of an imminent risk of additional flooding. Meanwhile, Chinese authorities mobilized a specialized team to assess and mitigate the threat posed by a rapidly rising lake formed by the debris. Despite the immense challenges, international aid, including from the United States, continued to stream into Nepal, as officials grappled with the immense scale of the disaster and the urgent need to rescue the missing and care for the dead.
