Tony Romo facing three more citations in connection with his arrest last month

Tony Romo, the 46-year-old former Dallas Cowboys quarterback and CBS lead analyst for NFL games, is facing three additional citations in connection with his arrest last month. Romo was initially arrested on July 23 in Wisconsin, suspected of driving under the influence. The amended charges now include possessing open intoxicants in a motor vehicle, unsafe passing on the right, and his first offense of operating while intoxicated.

In addition to the new citations, Romo already had a citation for refusing to perform a test for intoxication after his arrest. CBS Sports president David Berson has not yet announced a timeline for a decision regarding Romo's future with the network. As of now, Romo, 46, has been the lead game analyst for CBS' NFL coverage since 2017, having played for Dallas from 2004 to 2016, earning four Pro Bowl appearances.

On the day of his arrest, Romo was pulled over for a traffic violation while driving south on Interstate 43. According to the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office, the quarterback failed field sobriety tests before being arrested, booked, and released. The citations released by the sheriff’s office revealed that an open bottle of alcohol was found in the passenger’s side of Romo's black Jeep during an inventory before it was towed.

Body camera footage showed Romo telling deputies that he had recently visited a golf course and was heading to visit his grandparents when he was stopped. A deputy noted Romo displaying "red glassy eyes" and the odor of an intoxicating alcoholic beverage.

Romo has expressed full responsibility for his actions and has taken steps to resolve the matter, working with local authorities and CBS about next steps. High school classmates of Romo's are from Burlington, Wisconsin, a town located about 35 miles southwest of Milwaukee. Despite losing his franchise records for career passing yards to Dak Prescott last season, Romo remains the Cowboys' leader in career touchdown passes, boasting a total of 248.
