Tokyo’s Haneda Airport opens new Terminal 1 North Satellite next month

Tokyo's Haneda Airport is set to unveil a significant expansion next month with the opening of the new Terminal 1 North Satellite. This marks the first major expansion to the terminal since its inception 33 years ago in September 1993. The design of the satellite is unique and striking, featuring a lower section built with a traditional steel frame and an upper floor constructed from sustainable wood sourced from Japanese cedar, oak, and larch trees. The result is a bright and inviting atmosphere that evokes the scent of a Japanese forest.

The North Satellite boasts six fixed boarding bridges, which will eliminate the need to transfer passengers by bus between the building and their aircraft. These boarding bridges will share the same woody aesthetic as the rest of the new concourse. Additionally, the satellite will house a combination cafe/lounge called the Forest Lounge, exclusively for passengers with affiliated credit cards such as UV Mastercard and UC Visa. Non-cardholders can still purchase beverages and desserts as takeaway items.

For families traveling with young children, the North Satellite also offers a play area, with some equipment crafted from recycled plastic drink bottle caps collected at the airport. However, travelers should note that the North Satellite does not have a dedicated street entrance, requiring a 15-minute walk from Terminal 1's security checkpoints to reach the new expansion.

To expedite the journey, passengers can utilize moving walkways and the free autonomous mobility device "iino," which can transport up to four people and is available between 7 a.m. and 8 p.m.

Terminal 1 North Satellite is scheduled to commence commercial flights on September 1. While Haneda's Terminal 1 primarily serves domestic routes and is not directly relevant to international flights, the North Satellite represents an excellent opportunity to explore alternative transportation methods for visiting Japan's less-touristed regions.

With the decline of some domestic rail pass deals and increased congestion on bullet train lines, air travel can offer a convenient way to experience Japan beyond the well-known sights. As always, travelers should check-in early to comply with Haneda's latest luggage regulations.
