The mirror mind of Yayoi Kusama

Yayoi Kusama, the renowned Japanese avant-garde artist who gained international acclaim for her distinctive polka dot patterns and immersive installations, has passed away at the age of 97. Her studio in Tokyo confirmed her death on August 14, 2026, with a statement highlighting her lifelong dedication to art in various forms including painting, performance, fiction, and poetry.

Born in Matsumoto, Japan in 1929, Kusama became a trailblazer in modern art through her unique approach which combined visual art, performance, writing, and installations. Her signature bright red bob, psychedelic colors, and repeated dot motifs were instantly recognizable, contributing to her global fame. However, Kusama's journey was not without challenges.

She experienced rejection and struggled with mental health issues while persistently pursuing her artistic vision. Kusama first achieved international recognition after relocating to New York in 1958.
