'Test cricket needs character': Gambhir's message after India's draw vs Sri Lanka

Gautam Gambhir, India's head coach, commended his team for exhibiting the character and mental fortitude essential in Test cricket following India's 1-0 series win over Sri Lanka. Despite having the opportunity to secure a 2-0 series sweep, Sri Lanka mounted a resilient comeback in Colombo, forcing a draw even after being asked to follow on.

The coach expressed his pride in India's performance, praising them for their character and mental toughness, and he also highlighted the significant contributions of Sri Lanka's batter Sonal Dinusha, who played a pivotal role in Sri Lanka's resistance.

Dinusha's exceptional performance was crucial as he scored centuries in both innings of the Colombo Test, showcasing his batting prowess with an unbeaten 133 in the second innings. This unbroken knock frustrated India's attempts to wrap up the match. India batted first and amassed a formidable total of 503/9 before declaring in Colombo.

Standout performers for India included Devdutt Padikkal with an outstanding 117, Dhruv Jurel with an unbeaten 115, Rishabh Pant with 63, and captain Shubman Gill with a 50. However, Sri Lanka's resilience proved to be the deciding factor, as they were dismissed for 290 in their first innings.

Sri Lanka's Dinusha once again shone, posting a composed 103 in the first innings. Pasindu Sooriyabandara also played a notable role with an important 80. Despite India being in a strong position to win after dismissing Sri Lanka for 290 in the first innings, Dinusha's resilience towards the end of the match proved to be the game-changer.

The 112-run stand between Dinusha and Keshara Nuwantha, with Nuwantha's 46 from 150 deliveries, provided Sri Lanka with the necessary support to remain at the crease and secure the draw. This result ended India's aspirations of a clean sweep in the series but still secured them a 1-0 victory.
