Tenebe targets NPFL title as Insurance begins season

Bendel Insurance chairman, Jarrett Tenebe, is optimistic that the Benin Arsenals can win their first Nigeria Premier Football League title in 47 years during the 2026/27 season. Speaking to journalists ahead of the club's CAF Women’s Champions League WAFU B campaign in Burkina Faso, Tenebe expressed confidence that the team's preparations have placed it in a strong position to challenge for the championship.

The club, which won the NPFL title in 1973 and 1979, finished fifth in each of the last two seasons and aims to secure a third league crown. Tenebe's optimism stems from improved recruitment, preparations, and player incentives introduced to boost goal-scoring. When he became chairman last season, Tenebe recognized goal-scoring as a major weakness and began offering financial incentives for every goal scored, which contributed to the team's strong performance last season.

The club opens its NPFL 2026/27 campaign on August 30 against Warri Wolves at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City, with Tenebe expressing confidence in the team's ability to achieve success. Meanwhile, Edo Queens have also shown promise in women's continental football, recently defeating ASEC Mimosas of Ivory Coast 3-1 in the CAF Women’s Champions League WAFU B qualifiers.
