Sweden to deploy fighter jets, warships to Finland amid fears of 'deteroriating security situation'

Amid growing security concerns, Sweden has pledged to deploy fighter jets and warships to Finland to bolster protection of its territory. Finland's defense forces announced on Friday that Swedish Gripen fighter jets and a corvette warship will be stationed in the region, at least until the end of 2026. This deployment is expected to enhance air surveillance, allowing Finland to allocate its own resources to repel any potential violations or incidents. The neighboring nations, both members of NATO, already share a close defense cooperation.

In the statement, Finland's military highlighted the eastern border of the two countries, spanning 1,340 kilometers (833 miles), which stretches along Russia's territory. Acknowledging the deteriorating security situation, Sweden's Defense Minister Pal Jonson informed Reuters that his armed forces may assist Finland if required, including deploying ground-based anti-drone systems.

Additionally, Sweden may contribute military drones, which have recently raised concerns as some have drifted into the airspace of neighboring countries like Finland, Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania.

The escalating tensions between Russia and Ukraine have exacerbated these fears, with Ukraine's attacks on Russian Baltic Sea oil shipping ports resulting in some drones missing their targets. These incidents have prompted security warnings in the region. Recognizing this growing threat, Sweden has secured a 1.2 billion crown ($126 million) order for its RBS 70 NG portable air defense missile system from Finland.
