Stuart Fails To Save The Universe, a sci-fi comedy spin-off of The Big Bang Theory, attempts to give more depth to the show's side characters. These characters, including Stuart Bloom, Denise, Bert, and Barry Kripke, are given richer storylines than they had in the original series. However, the spin-off fails to extend the same courtesy to Raj Koothrappali, one of the most prominent characters from The Big Bang Theory.

In the sixth and latest episode of Stuart Fails To Save The Universe, Kunal Nayyar, who plays Raj in the original series, briefly appears as an astrophysicist ranting about collapsing galaxies on a Pasadena street corner. Despite the quartet's journey through dimensions, no one takes Raj seriously, not even his friends Stuart and Denise. This treatment of Raj is reminiscent of how he was often portrayed on The Big Bang Theory, as a one-dimensional character with a stereotypical accent and submissive nature.

The spin-off continues the tradition of treating Raj poorly, as he has been throughout the original series. For 12 seasons, Nayyar's comedic timing was used to deliver numerous racist jokes, and Raj remained a relatively irksome character with limited development. His most genuine connections were with his pet dog, a phone app, and Howard Wolowitz, another character from the original series.

In contrast, the spin-off provides more nuance and development for other Big Bang Theory characters, such as Penny, Bernadette, and Amy. Penny becomes the leader of a resilience group trying to overthrow an AI-led government, Bernadette becomes a demon, and Amy consoling Stuart when he tries to explain his multiversal predicament showcases the depth given to these characters.

Raj, however, remains a one-note loner who either gets killed or disrespected, even in an infinite number of alternate realities. His brief appearance in Stuart Fails To Save The Universe is a throwaway line, with no additional context or development. This disappointment is further compounded by the fact that the spin-off gives other characters well-earned voice, personality, and storylines.
