Someone Becomes Victim To Memory Scam; Finds DDR4 Chips With DDR5 Markings

An X user known as @watagjt recently fell victim to a sophisticated memory scam when they unknowingly purchased what they believed to be DDR5 RAM but found out it was actually DDR4 chips soldered onto a DDR5 PCB. The scam was particularly deceptive as the memory module, from Kingston, bore the authentic 32GB DDR5-5600 CL40 model markings.

The scammers had cleverly marked the lower-grade DDR4 chips with Micron logos, making them appear legitimate to anyone unaware of the distinction. The scammers had meticulously researched DDR5 specifications, as the DDR5 chips use an 82-ball VFBGA package (9 x 11mm), while the DDR4 modules used in the scam shared the same 9 x 11mm package size but employed a 78-ball TFBGA layout.

The scam's success depended on the buyer's lack of technical expertise, as examining the parts under a microscope is necessary to identify the discrepancy. The victim, fortunately, removed the heatsink and discovered the deception, warning others against purchasing untested or unfamiliar memory modules.
