Ruto warns new police officers against abuse of power

Nairobi, Kenya - President William Ruto addressed over 6,000 newly trained police officers at their graduation ceremony on Friday, emphasizing the importance of responsible and accountable policing. Ruto urged the recruits to uphold the Constitution, respect citizens' rights, and remain disciplined and impartial. He warned against corruption, excessive force, and abuse of power, stating that police officers must protect vulnerable individuals and treat all citizens with dignity.

Ruto highlighted the importance of striking a balance between maintaining public order and safeguarding individual freedoms, particularly as Kenya prepares for the 2027 General Election. He cautioned against targeting specific groups while allowing those who enable criminal activity to evade responsibility. The President also stressed that the police would have a constitutional duty to protect the democratic process during the upcoming election and stressed the significance of public trust in law enforcement.

The newly trained officers completed a nine-month training program covering various aspects of policing, including legal studies, firearms skills, and human rights. Inspector-General of Police Douglas Kanja stated that the graduates were now equipped with the necessary competencies to serve the country effectively. The Interior Cabinet Secretary, Kipchumba Murkomen, noted that these new recruits were part of a broader effort to address personnel shortages within the National Police Service, with the government investing in training reforms, modern equipment, and technology to enhance policing capabilities.

The recruits took an oath to uphold the Constitution, preserve peace, prevent offenses, and faithfully execute their duties according to the law.
