Roger Waters joins over 100 artists demanding support for Gaza at Venice Film Festival

In a challenging season for renowned film festivals, organizers faced mounting pressure to take a stance on issues beyond artistic merit at the Venice Film Festival. This year, over 100 artists, including Pink Floyd's Roger Waters, joined a collective of high-profile figures to demand "concrete action in support of Palestine." Waters, known for his vocal criticism of the Israeli government's actions in Gaza, was among the signatories to an open letter addressed to the Venice4Palestine collective.

The letter called for the festival to display the Palestinian flag, sever ties with organizations linked to the Israeli government, and provide safeguards for artists who distance themselves from such associations. The controversies surrounding this year's Venice Film Festival echo those seen at the Berlin and Cannes festivals, which grappled with issues such as Russia, right-wing media control, and the rise of AI.

Despite organizers' longstanding commitment to the festival's non-political nature, this year's lineup includes films that are likely to provoke controversy regarding the ongoing conflict in Gaza. Among the featured films are Ahmed Hassouna's Citizen Osama and Muayad Alayan's Conversation with the Sea, as well as NAZA, a documentary by No Other Land's Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor exposing the systems behind Israel's mass killings of Palestinian civilians in Gaza.

Another notable inclusion is Ben Hania's The Voice Of Hind Rajab, a powerful drama depicting the emergency call from a five-year-old Palestinian girl after her family's car was destroyed by Israeli bombing during the 2024 invasion of Gaza City.
