QatarEnergy extends LNG supply suspension to Italy until November

QatarEnergy has prolonged the suspension of liquefied natural gas (LNG) deliveries to Italian energy company Edison until November. This decision comes in the wake of damage to the company's LNG production facilities in Iran in March, leading to a supply disruption that began in April. Edison had initially announced the suspension on July 28, highlighting the ongoing impact of the infrastructure damage.

The suspension, which will affect five scheduled LNG cargoes between the end of September and early November, is a direct consequence of the Iranian strikes on Qatar's Ras Laffan complex. The force majeure clauses in the contractual agreement allow QatarEnergy to halt production without facing penalties due to events beyond their control.

Shell, which owns a 30% stake in QatarEnergy LNG's fourth expansion train, anticipates that the full repair of Qatar's damaged LNG production could take until the first quarter of 2027. Prior to the war, Qatar supplied approximately 20% of the global LNG demand. QatarEnergy's annual production capacity stands at around 77 million tonnes.

Most of the company's supplies are contracted to Asian buyers, with the remainder being delivered to Europe. The ongoing conflict in Iran has significantly disrupted global LNG shipments, with the Strait of Hormuz acting as a major chokepoint for energy exports. Industry tracker Kpler reports that LNG tanker crossings across the strait have been limited, with only nine voyages recorded in August compared to 40 in June and 17 in July.

The 25-year contract between Edison and QatarEnergy, which has been in effect since 2009, stipulates that Edison receives 6.4 billion cubic meters of natural gas annually, accounting for about 10% of Italy's total consumption.
